Monte Kiffin will return to the NFL in 2013 as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator. It has been four days since the Dallas Cowboys officially hired Monte Kiffin to take over as defensive coordinator. If you respect Larry Lacewell’s opinion—and a certain owner obviously does—you have reason for optimism. The former scouting director has told several reporters that Kiffin will have no trouble making his mark in Dallas. Meanwhile, Rob Ryan will reportedly become defensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams. One of several reasons cited for the change in Dallas was that the defense under Ryan simply lacked discipline. There will be plenty of time to debate the pros and cons of this move, but here are a few numbers to consider. Age at the Beginning of the 2013 Season Kiffin: 73 Ryan: 50 Experience as NFL Defensive Coordinator Kiffin: 15 Years Ryan: 9 years Defensive Philosophy Kiffin: 4-3 in a relatively system known as the Tampa-2 Ryan: 3-4 with a relatively complex system of blitzes and coverages Number of Teams Coached (Before Dallas) Kiffin: 3 Ryan: 3 Number of Playoff Seasons While Defensive Coordinator Kiffin: 8 Ryan: 0 Number of Seasons with Winning Records While Defensive Coordinator Kiffin: 7 Ryan: 0 Number of Times Defenses Finished in the Top 5 in Yards Allowed Kiffin: 8 Ryan: 1 Number of Times Defenses Finished in the Top 5 in Points Allowed Kiffin: 6 Ryan: 0   No, these numbers don’t mean everything, but there is a good chance fans won’t have to put up with so much hype that surrounded Ryan. Jerry Jones the owner, must fire Jerry Jones the GM

If Jerry Jones were to come out and fire himself as the general manager of the Dallas Cowboys, I believe these would be the words of the pompous owner. “Jerry Jones the owner, must fire Jerry Jones the GM.” He refused to talk about the firing of coaches but Jones, Jason Garrett, Tony Romo and other members of the Dallas Cowboys are furious at the results of the 2012 NFL season...

Daughter of Cowboys owner heads Final Four group

Charlotte Jones Anderson, the daughter of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, will lead the organizing committee for next year's Final Four at Cowboys Stadium. Anderson's appointment on Tuesday came about a month after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced she would head the league's reorganized charitable arm, now called the National Football League Foundation. The...

Jerry Jones' changes have yet to finish the job

The Dallas Cowboys' pursuit of legendary defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin may have started as early as last summer. A small delegation of Cowboys staffers attended a USC practice last August and came away impressed with how much energy the soon-to-be 73-year-old Kiffin still possessed, according to a source. That's not to say the Cowboys expected Rob Ryan to fail, but...

Dallas Cowboys 2013 Needs

Another year, another Cowboys December meltdown. This year the script was a little bit different. Entering the month of December at 5-6, it didn’t look like there would be anything for the team to choke away, but three straight wins put them in control of their own destiny with two games to go. Even with a week 16 loss, the Giants’ late season struggles allowed the Cowboys to...

New UNLV Stadium could have 100 yard video screen

What happens in Vegas will soon be seen everywhere. The proposal of a 60,000-seat stadium for UNLV football includes a 100-yard video board. The entire project, known as “UNLV Now”, is valued at $800 million. The 100-yard video board would be 40 yards longer then the one at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. “When Vegas puts on a show, people expect something amazing...

With Kelly to Eagles, was Kiffin the right hire?

The Cowboys fired a cutting-edge defensive coordinator in Rob Ryan over philosophical differences. Ryan's unorthodox methods often left the players confused and out of position. The hiring of the Monte Kiffin, 72, is an effort by the Cowboys to move away from exotic looks and two-man pass rushes and get back to basic, sound defense. But in doing so, did they swing the pendulum...
