So imagine my surprise on a late Tuesday afternoon, about to take a shower and scurry off to a dinner date with a couple friends, and the phone rings. The Colts had reportedly released DT Ed Johnson, again. Hmmmmm. Most are well aware of Johnson's checkered past. He had trouble in college. He was cut last year after one game because of an arrest for marijuana possession while he was speeding around town. Anybody says they are surprised, well, perhaps we shouldn't be. But, honestly, I am. It's not that there was some naive notion that a guy with a penchant for off-field problems was going to be a saint overnight, but you got the sense from talking to him in recent weeks that he was grateful for the opportunity to get a second chance in the NFL. Honestly, I was more surprised that he got re-signed, in terms of accepting news, compared to this. But still ... The Colts won't comment on it until Wednesday. So we don't know for sure why they released their best ...
