PLAYERS: Cam Newton
TEAMS: Carolina Panthers
Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon believes race is a factor for all the criticism Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton receives.  Newton disagrees. "I haven't heard anything he said. But obviously Warren is a person I go to for guidance and leadership on the field and off the field. … When it comes to (racism) I don't think there is any at all." Said Newton via the Chicago Tribune. Moon thinks Newton should be compared to Jay Cutler over Vince Young, telling Yahoo! Sports: "I heard somebody compare him to Vince Young. It's the same old crap -- it's always a comparison of one black to another black. I get tired of it. I get tired of defending it," Moon told the website.  "If you want to compare him to someone because of his demeanor, compare him to Jay Cutler. There are a lot of guys who whine and moan. Cam's not biting anybody's head off or pushing his linemen (as the Bears quarterback did during a Week 2 loss to the Panthers). He's just disgruntled, and not handling losing well, because, think about it, he basically didn't lose in college," Moon continued.  "I don't think Cam's as bad as Cutler, because Cutler looks like he doesn't give a damn sometimes, or he's yelling and cussing at someone. Cam, he just looks down when they're losing." Everyone can agree if Newton plays better the criticism will stop. "I understand I'm not perfect. I'm striving to be great," said Newton during a conference call Wednesday.  "Whatever people may think, or whatever people may criticize me on, I take it for what it's worth, and continuously try to make myself better each and every opportunity I get."

Warren Moon: Cam Newton criticism has to do with race

Warren Moon does not feel as though Cam Newton is being treated with the respect he deserves. The Carolina Panthers are off to a disappointing 1-5 start this season, and Newton has not handled it well. The rough start hit its low point for Newton personally when he gave an overly dramatic postgame press conference after losing to the Cowboys last Sunday, during which he called a...

Warren Moon Says Cam Newton Needs to 'Grow Up,' But Believes Race Also Fuels Criticism

Cam Newton gains critics by the week, thanks in large part to his subpar play on the field and even more so his demeanor off of th field. The Carolina Panthers quarterback may have hit a new low following his team's fifth loss of the season this past Sunday with a head-scratching postgame news conference. Newton was once again visibly distraught, while passing...

Is Criticism of Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton Considered Racist?

In the last 24 hour news cycle, veteran QB Warren Moon has made innuendos suggesting that the current criticism of Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton might be rooted in racism against black quarterbacks. I grew up and have met Warren Moon and have nothing but the utmost respect for the quarterback that threw for over 70,000 yards and 435 touchdowns during his 23 year career which spanned...

Kris Jenkins: Cam Newton is a pr**k, and that’s a good thing

Former Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Kris Jenkins has a very strong opinion of Cam Newton. Jenkins believes Newton is a “pr**ck,” but he means it in the best way possible. During the Week 7 edition of CBS Local Sports’ “Cover 3″ segment, where experts discuss three different topics for two minutes each, Jenkins was asked to discuss whether or not Newton should be benched...

Filling Up Cam Newton’s Suggestion Box

After another game in which Cam Newton looked every bit like a second year quarterback who relies too much on his physical gifts, doesn’t have enough weapons and plays in a ****** system for a ****** coach, he decided that one of the ways to fix things would  be to leave a suggestion box out for reporters and writers to add their thoughts on how to best solve the struggling Panthers’...

Players, coaches say Panthers face leadership void

Several coaches and players agree with ousted general manager Marty Hurney's assessment that there's a leadership void in the Panthers locker room. After being fired Monday Hurney suggested more players need to ''step and up and say enough is enough'' when it comes to losing games. He said leadership in any NFL locker room is critical - and the young Panthers...

Cowboys VP: We're heading in a good direction

Stephen Jones seems to understand that the Cowboys are a work in progress. Even after the executive vice president watched his team hold the Carolina Panthers to 14 points Sunday in Charlotte, he noticed that improvements are still needed on the defensive side of the ball. "We're still giving up some big plays," Jones said Monday during his weekly radio appearance...

The Fantasy Basement is a weekly piece that provides fantasy advice on lineup calls, sleepers, waiver-wire moves and rookie spotlights, along with the occasional ramble or four.
