PLAYERS: Cam Newton
Last week, former NBA great Michael Jordan chimed in Cam Newton’s struggles this season. “Obviously he’s trying to put a lot of things on his back and that’s human nature. Sometimes when you expect so many great things you want to carry that burden yourself. And its virtually impossible,” Jordan told Tom Sorensen of the Charlotte Observer. “He’s got to look at himself in the mirror,” Jordan continued. “Every leader in any scenario always must look himself in the mirror and say, ‘Can I do more?’ or ‘What can I do to enhance the scenario with my teammates to pull them along?’ or do whatever I can to try to make the situation better.” After yesterday’s win over the Redskins, Newton told the media that he has a very close relationship with Jordan. “I think Michael Jordan is … an outlet for me to talk to,” Newton said. “And everybody knows his skill set of what he brought to the game of basketball and how great he played at a high level for years to come. So I’m very close to him and I have an ongoing relationship with him and will continue to have it. So anything he has said I need to do, my ears are open. And you know I’m going to be willing to do it.” I’m the sure the Panthers and their fans would love to see Jordan’s magic rub off on to Newton.   var _CI = _CI || {}; (function() { var script = document.createElement('script'); ref = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; _CI.counter = (_CI.counter) ? _CI.counter + 1 : 1; document.write(''); script.type = 'text/javascript'; script.src = 'http://widget.crowdignite.com/widgets/27484?_ci_wid=_CI_widget_'+_CI.counter; script.async = true; ref.parentNode.insertBefore(script, ref); })(); sr_adspace_id = 1000005525107; sr_adspace_width = 300; sr_adspace_height = 250; sr_ad_new_window = true; sr_adspace_type = "graphic";

In 2011, five rookie quarterbacks actually started games, but only two of them were named the starter for the season opener: Cam Newton and Andy Dalton.
