Keep checking this space. I’ll be updating what’s happening at Packers training camp throughout the day. July 26, 2013 Aaron Rodgers faced the media for the first time since his friend and business partner Ryan Braun admitted taking PEDs. The face of the franchise handled the situation perfectly. “I was shocked, I really was, just like many of you were,” said the star quarterback. “I was backing up a friend. He looked me in the eye on multiple occasions and repeatedly denied these allegations and said they were not true. So, it is disappointing, not only for myself as a friend, but for obviously Wisconsin sports fans, Brewer fans, really baseball fans. It doesn’t feel great being lied to like that and I’m disappointed in the way it all went down… I don’t regret backing a friend up. Obviously, in hindsight a more measured approach would be a better course of action.” (3:19 p.m.) One day after saying he was very confident “that we will do a better job being healthier,” Mike McCarthy announced that two key defensive players will be sidelined for the start of camp due to injuries sustained while working out on their own. According to the coach, end Mike Neal (abdomen) and corner Casey Hayward (hamstring) will be out “a couple of weeks.” This is a setback for Neal, who is attempting to learn how to play linebacker. He’ll need all the reps he can get. (2:48 p.m.) Second-year offensive lineman Andrew Datko worked at left guard with the second team. With minimal depth on the interior, I get why the coaches are giving the former Florida State star a look at a position he hasn’t played since high school. But there’s a reason why he hasn’t played there since high school. Like I correctly opined about Derek Sherrod two summers ago, Datko also lacks the build and the physical skills to play guard at an acceptable level in the National Football League. The sooner the coaches realize this, the better his chances to make the final roster. (9:03 a.m.)
