Can Will Levis prove he's ready for Brian Callahan to 'hand the keys over' to Titans offense in 2024?
Thomas Shea-USA TODAY Sports

It's only May, but new head coach Brian Callahan has already made significant strides towards building the Tennessee Titans into a winner. He's brought in a completely revamped coaching staff. He's implemented new practice methods at Rookie Minicamp for the offensive line . And according to several key players he's already developing a great culture. But none of that will matter unless quarterback Will Levis can take the next step leading the offense in 2024.

New Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan joined The Athletic's Robert Mays on the Athletic Football Show to talk through exactly that. He talked through where is Will Levis in his development and seemed pleased, but the question remains: Can coach Callahan trust Levis enough to 'hand over the keys' to the offense like he talks about in the interview (that you can listen to via the post below)?

Coach Callahan kicked things off talking up Levis by saying:

"Thank God he [fell in the draft], he slides, and he's here in Tennessee with me. And I just love everything he's about. And I think he's got real talent. He has a real ability to be a high-level quarterback in the NFL."

More high praise for Levis coming from coach Callahan, as has been the case since he took the Titans job early this spring. There seems to be a strong relationship forming between Will Levis and Brian Callahan already throughout spring and minicamp.

During the first rounds of May media availability, Levis talked through that player-coach relationship already forming saying, "I've never really had that...where it's a friend with a coach...you always have that dynamic of 'he's the boss and I'm his worker'...but [Callahan]'s done a good job of coming in with the mind set of, 'Hey, I'm the coach, what I say goes, and I'm going to tell you guys what to do, but I'm also here for you guys and talk about anything.'"

Levis went on to talk through some of the quarterbacks that he and coach Callahan had been watching film on in preparation to install the new Titans offense:

"I want to be that next guy. I don't want to be them. I want to be me...but I want to perform and exceed the levels they performed at."

It's great to hear confidence and the clear desire to be great from Levis. But again, in the interview with The Athletic, coach Callahan made it clear that it can take some time before he typically "hands over the keys" to his offense completely.

"Yeah. You have to earn the right to [dictate how his team's offense] works...It's hard to just hand the keys over. I mean, you can earn that over time, earn the ability to go run the show as a starting quarterback...We learned about [Joe Burrow, in Cincinnati] pretty quickly that he can handle all of that. And that's not for everybody...It takes work to get there. And I think some guys take to it quicker than others."

On what the Titans are trying to do in Tennessee with Levis:

"That's what we're trying to build here, is [to] give Will these opportunities. And we'll see what he grows into and we'll see where he fits. But we're trying to make an environment where as much as he can handle, we're going to give him."

Callahan went on to talk through how quarterbacks like Peyton Manning, Mathew Stafford, and Joe Burrow, have acclimated to his system. In every case the quarterbacks--no matter who they were--made mistakes, but enjoyed the process, eventually proving that they possessed the requisite processing and accuracy to succeed in his system.

He did not speak to Levis' specific ability to catch on in that same way just yet, but the good news is that there's still plenty of time between now and the season for Levis to prove himself.

It sounds like coach Callahan is already beginning to hand more and more over to Will Levis as they learn what works together. However, it also sounds like Levis may have a good ways to go before Callahan hands the keys over to the Titans offense, letting him go full speed ahead calling the shots.

Hopefully with an elite trio of wide receivers, an improved offensive line, and a quarterback friendly coach who has shown he can build a successful offense wherever he goes Will Levis can prove he's ready to be the franchise quarterback the Titans have been searching for.
