Miami Hurricanes recruit Ja’Quan Newton had 33 points to lead the Neumann-Goretti Saints to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class AAA basketball championship. They beat the Susquehanna Township Indians 64-57 in overtime on Friday night. Newton was grieving the death of his mother. Lisa Brown passed away from cancer the day before the game, reported by PennLive. The point guard went to practice Thursday night and the team rallied around him. On Friday, the Indians took a one-point lead with under two minutes left on the clock. Newton split a pair of free throws to send the game into the extra period. He had six points after regulation, including the basket that put Neumann-Goretti up for good. The Saints finished the season 27-4. Miami will have another solid option for point guard next year and Newton has to potential to fill the role of a much-needed emotional leader. “He’s competed against high-level competition and is a proven scorer,” said Hurricanes coach Jim Larrañaga in an official press release. Newton, 6-2, 180 lbs, signed his National Letter of Intent in November. He also received offers from Minnesota, Syracuse, Texas A&M, UCLA and Oregon. He holds the career-record in the Philadelphia Catholic League with 1,972 points. He was also named the Catholic League MVP  and named to the All-Catholic First Team.
