Now that everyone has had some time to think about what happened in the Super Bowl, do we all still really believe that Eli Manning is an elite NFL quarterback? Of course I can’t speak for everybody else, but I certainly do not. If you’ve won two Super Bowls in your career, odds are you’re a very good NFL quarterback, and the intent of my argument is not to deny this. However, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, and Ben Roethlisberger are all still definitely superior to Eli. To me, the word elite should be restricted to these top 5.

Eli would have to start having seasons like he did in 2011 consistently over the next few seasons to jump into this category. This could very well happen, but as of now he’s just not there yet. In 2011, Eli did play like an elite quarterback, but all the other quarterbacks on that list have been playing like one for at least a few years now. The Super Bowl argument is certainly a legitimate one; Super Bowls should be one of the main things quarterbacks are judged off of. Yet Brady, Manning, Rodgers, and Roethlisberger have also won Super Bowls. The other quarterback that I put ahead of Eli, Drew Brees, is so superior statistically that it overrides the Super Bowl’s in my opinion. Brees’ career quarterback rating is 110.6, while Eli Manning’s career quarterback rating is 92.9. Do two Super Bowl victories cancel out that discrepancy in statistics? In my view they do not. I’m not trying to hate on Eli or reign on his parade. I’m just trying to give an informed reality check now that football fans have had some time to take in the Super Bowl upset victory of Eli’s career. It’s easy for analysts to jump to conclusions about a player after a career-defining win like that, but Eli still has some work to do before he cracks the always exclusive elite quarterback club.
