Found August 27, 2012 on My Sports Rumors:

In a somewhat surprising move today the New York Giants placed defensive tackle Chris Canty on the Physically Unable to Performance list. Even Canty was very surprised by the mood and didn’t sound to happy about it.

“I’m not going to say I saw it coming,” Canty said. “Obviously I was optimistic about it. I feel good. I feel in pretty good shape considering all the factors. I stand by the position my knee is better than it was November, December, January of last season. But ultimately this was a decision that was made in the best interest of the football team.” (NY Daily News)

“If you were to ask me (back then), ‘Would I start the season on PUP?’ I’d say there’s no chance,” Canty said. “But here I am. It is what it is. Yeah, it is disappointing. But at the end of the day what can you do?”(NY Daily News)

Canty had off season surgery on his knee and hasn’t been able to practice with the team yet. With only ten days to go till the season opener it’s been looking pretty likely that he won’t play in that game. What’s troubling to me is that this move says that the team thinks Canty’s a lot further from playing then everyone thought.

After placing Canty on PUP, Tom Coughlin said “The only thing I can tell you is that we sort of expected that to be the case. We dealt with the thought of how fast he ought to come back, and it’s better for the player and team as well that he has this extra time.”(NY Daily News)

This is a huge blow to the Giants early on as their defensive line is currently riddled with injuries. Canty won’t even be allowed to practice with the team till October 15th which means his first game could come on October 21st verse the Washington Redskins.

Hopefully this doesn’t create any issues between player and management as Canty really felt he can perform at a high level now. He’s saying all the right things but you have to wonder.

“Ultimately, the decision rests with them, not with me,” Canty said. “All I can do is do the best with the options that I have. I feel that physically, I’m ready to compete at a very high level if and when I’m allowed to come back and play. That’s what I can do.”(NY Daily News)

The decision could be a huge plus if he comes back healthy. By not playing till week seven at the earliest it will leave Canty well rested, healthy and very fresh for the stretch run. At least I hope.
