Just days after the Cardinals acquired quarterback Kevin Kolb, the team made another splash in free agency by signing ex-Ravens tight end Todd Heap to a two-year contract.
Heap served 10 seasons in Baltimore, amassing some very impressive career numbers: 467 receptions, 5,492 receiving yards, and 41 touchdowns. Good news for Arizona (and Kevin Kolbelievers): last season’s performance was on par with top-shelf Heap. In 13 games he averaged 3.1 receptions, 46 receiving yards, and 0.4 touchdowns per game. Those are solid tight end numbers, but it’s a question mark how he’ll be used in Arizona.
Last season, the Cardinals leading tight end, Ben Patrick, had just 15 receptions. And aside from Larry Fitzgerald and Early Doucet, who had 90 and 47 receptions each, no one on the roster had more than 26 receptions.
Those numbers are expected to change with the arrival of Kolb, who loved passing to Brent Celek. In weeks four through seven, Kolb hit Celek 12 times for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Celek was the sole recipient of a touchdown pass in two of those games, which suggests Kolb, like most quarterbacks, prefers big targets in the red zone. Add it all up and Heap could wind up a fantasy sleeper — and Kolb a decent fantasy option in an unsteady division.
