According to Michael David Smith of Profootballtalk.com, the Arizona Cardinals have released 5 time Pro Bowl safety Adrian Wilson. The Cardinals re-signed Wilson to a new five-year, $39 million contract, with $18.5 million guaranteed in 2009, however, he was entering the final year of the contract. As is the case under new management, he was seen as a fixture of the past. Wilson holds the NFL record for most sacks in a single season by a defensive back (8). The release came a few days before free agency and will give him the jump to hook on to another team, and there will be plenty of suitors. Smith writes: ‘Wilson, who has played more games for the franchise than any other player since the Cardinals moved to Arizona in 1988, was informed today that he is being released. The move will save about $3 million in salary cap space for Arizona. Although it’s hard to think of Wilson in any other team’s uniform, this move is not particularly surprising. It is well known that the Cardinals want to get younger under their new coaching staff, and Wilson will turn 34 during the 2013 season.’   var switchTo5x=true; stLight.options({publisher:''});

  • While Wilson may be a reminder of the past, his play on the field - as well as the rest of the defense- has been the bright spot of Cardinal football. If it aint broke, don't fix it! There are some things that are worth a few extra bucks to stay competitive. Who is going to step into Wilson's shoes? Mark these words, this is a serious dismantling mistake of the defense! Arians had better make good on this move or a long ride out of Arizona is in store for his future.
