A couple of weeks ago, the Arizona Cardinals
called at least two teams regarding a possible trade for receiver Anquan Boldin.
Since then, there have been rumors of efforts by the Cardinals and agent Drew Rosenhaus to work out a new deal.
This latter point meshes with an assertion contained in Peter King’s latest MMQB column — that the Cardinals haven’t abandoned the possibility of extending Boldin’s contract.
Boldin currently is signed through 2010 to a deal that pays him much less than teammate Larry Fitzgerald
is making. Though Boldin won’t get (and, as we hear it, doesn’t want)
the same $10 million annual average paid to Fitzgerald, a new contract
will need to be in the same ballpark as Fitzgerald, possibly as high as
$9 million per year.
If Boldin is traded, the Roy Williams
deal from last season surely will be an impediment. Dallas gave up a
first-round pick, a third-round pick, and a fifth-round pick for
Williams — and Boldin arguably is as good if not better.
