Since the departure of Matt Moore for Miami, the Panthers are left with a gap where a veteran quarterback ought to be. That hole may soon be filled by Derek Anderson, a decent NFL backup who continues to get work (somewhat astoundingly) and will be visiting Carolina Monday.
But with Cam Newton and Jimmy Clausen as the only two options on the depth chart, Carolina needs someone.
Clausen, as Carolina fans will remember (but may wish to forget), was dreadful in his rookie season, completing just 52.5 percent of his passes and throwing just three touchdowns to nine interceptions. Those numbers added up to one win, nine losses, and the top pick in the draft, which Carolina confidently spent on Cam Newton.
Unfortunately, Newton’s year one potential is a question mark, making it necessary for the Panthers to acquire a veteran. If that veteran happens to be Derek Anderson, Carolina will be looking at a very interesting quarterback situation. Anderson is likely to begin the season as the number two quarterback on the depth chart, but if Carolina is forced to count on him as the starter, things could go south in a hurry. Anderson’s completion percentage last season (51.7) was worse than Clausen’s — and he threw more interceptions (10).
Let’s hope Newton works out.
