Apparently Steve Smith loves what he has in the new look Carolina Panthers offense, because Smith and the Panthers have signed a three-year extension, which would keep Smith in Carolina through 2015 with an optional for one additional year in 2016, according to Pro Football Weekly.
As of now, the financial numbers of the deal are unknown, but Smith was due to earn $7.75 million in 2012, and now the Panthers likely will pay Smith more than that amount — which includes guaranteed money up front, for this season.
It’s expected that Smith will sign his new contract sometime Tuesday afternoon at the team’s facilities.
The Panthers will have to make a decision on whether to exercise the option, adding one more year to the deal through 2016, in the summer of 2014.
