Captain Munnerlyn knows NFL cornerbacks need to have a short memory - and thick skin.
So when the undersized Munnerlyn hears the criticism suggesting someone else should be starting for the Carolina Panthers at the No. 2 cornerback spot, he doesn't get angry.
He just works that much harder.
He says ''there's a lot of people out there who're like, `We need another corner,''' but ''it doesn't bother me at all.''
The 5-foot-8 Munnerlyn started 14 games for Carolina last season but had no interceptions. He was targeted 60 times according to STATS and allowed a completed pass 65 percent of the time - by far the most on the team.
Coach Ron Rivera believes Munnerlyn is capable of starting, but made it clear the No. 2 cornerback spot is open to competition.

The Carolina Panthers open the 2012 NFL Preseason at home Saturday night against the Houston Texans. The first exhibition game usually features starters in for a series or two, but mostly, it gives teams a chance to hit someone new (see: New York Jets fights on Monday and Tuesday this week).
Quarterback Cam Newton looks to lead the Panthers to the playoffs.

Things move so fast these days that you often forget those that don’t win or lose in epic fashion.
We remember JaMarcus Russell’s fall from the mountain top because with the exception of Ryan Leaf, never has there been a projected franchise quarterback that has crashed so hard and with so much drama.
Former Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen has and continues to fall out-of-sight...
Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith was held out of the second half of Tuesday morning's practice after bruising his left knee.
Coach Ron Rivera says Smith is ''fine'' and anticipates he will return to practice Wednesday. Rivera says the decision was made to ice Smith's knee right away.
Smith came down hard on his knee early in practice while trying...
The circus is back in town. And no, I’m not talking Ringling Brothers.
Over the next few weeks, the media circus will descend upon cities like Anderson, Indiana and Earth City, Missouri in order to get that first NFL training camp story that will make national headlines and captivate America. That is, at least until the preseason begins.
But who can blame them? We are all...
Panthers tight end Greg Olsen will be expected to shoulder the full positional workload this season.
As a long-time NFL Sunday Ticket subscriber (Click Here to learn about it), I watch quite a bit of football. In recent memory, the always-volatile NFC South has been the most interesting division to watch. The upcoming NFL season should be no exception. Here’s what to expect in the NFC South in 2012: New [...]
Panthers receiver Steve Smith says he'' lit into'' Cam Newton about his actions on the sidelines when the young quarterback was replaced late in the fourth quarter of Thursday night's 36-7 blowout loss to the New York Giants.
Smith says he was upset when Newton remained sitting on the bench instead of watching backup Derek Anderson and trying to learn from his...
Panthers coach Ron Rivera says trainers are optimistic wide receiver David Gettis will be back on the practice field in about ''four or five days.''
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith may have had a point when he slighted Cam Newton by saying that big numbers don’t necessarily equate to winning football games. In fact, Newton passed for 4,000-plus yards last season and the Panthers won just six games. The Panthers lost all three games in which Newton passed for more than 300 yards. Yes, you can point the ?nger at...

Jeff Otah has had a full plate as of late. The offensive tackle was traded by the Carolina Panthers to the New York Jets last week, only to go back to the Panthers based on the trade not going through due to Otah’s failure to pass a mandatory physical. Otah was a first round pick by Carolina in the 2008 NFL Draft, but has battled the injury bug ever since. Then the Panthers...
