The Chargers added an important piece to their roster on Saturday, and they hope he never has to play. Quarterback Billy Volek agreed to a 2-year contract to stay in San Diego and back up Philip Rivers. Volek, a 12-year veteran, has been a Charger since 2006 but only thrown 44 passes. Still, he was a successful starter in Tennessee and provides valuable insurance in case Rivers is injured. As part of the new labor deal, Volek can't practice until August 4th. That gives him one week to prepare for the Chargers' first preseason game, in Seattle on August 11th.
