One of the least surprising moves on “Black Monday” (one day following the end of the 2012 NFL regular season) were made by San Diego Chargers team chairman and president Dean Spanos, who officially announced on New Year’s Eve that general manager A.J. Smith and coach Norv Turner will be fired.
“I thank A.J. and Norv for the determination and integrity they brought to the Chargers each and every day,” Spanos said in a statement released by the team. ”Both Norv and A.J. are consummate NFL professionals, and they understand that in this league, the bottom-line is winning. My only goal is the Super Bowl, and that is why I have decided to move in a new direction with both our head coach and general manager positions. I am committed to our great fans, and we will do whatever we possibly can to achieve that goal.”

SAN DIEGO - Chargers coach Norv Turner sounded like a coach resigned to his fate. I started writing a recap of every team in the NFL. I was going to rip most teams to shreds and really only give like…three teams any credit whatsoever (Broncos, Patriots, 49ers if you’re really that curious). I was building my list alphabetically. I mocked the Cardinals. I gave credit to like, one-fifth of the Falcons. If The post Chicago Bears Needed to Move On From Lovie...

The Chargers parted ways with Norv Turner and A.J. Smith on Monday, knocking down the first dominoes in a long chain. The team will hire a new GM before identifying its next head coach. Here is a look at what went down on Black Monday and the team Turner and Smith left behind.
After firing Norv Turner as their coach on Monday, the San Diego Chargers are interested in Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians as a possible replacement, according to the NFL Network. Fired coaches Andy Reid (Philadelphia Eagles) and Ken Whisenhunt (Arizona Cardinals) are also rumored candidates. Arians, who filled in for Chuck Pagano while he took a leave...
Doc Rivers has always stuck up for fellow members of the coaching community. He’s also a Chicago native. So it was doubly hard for him on Monday when he heard that longtime Bears coach Lovie Smith had been sacked.
Despite an 81-63 record in nine years in Chicago, and a win in the final game of the season, Smith was sent packing Monday. The Bears failed to make the playoffs when...
