One of the least surprising moves on “Black Monday” (one day following the end of the 2012 NFL regular season) were made by San Diego Chargers team chairman and president Dean Spanos, who officially announced on New Year’s Eve that general manager A.J. Smith and coach Norv Turner will be fired.
“I thank A.J. and Norv for the determination and integrity they brought to the Chargers each and every day,” Spanos said in a statement released by the team. ”Both Norv and A.J. are consummate NFL professionals, and they understand that in this league, the bottom-line is winning. My only goal is the Super Bowl, and that is why I have decided to move in a new direction with both our head coach and general manager positions. I am committed to our great fans, and we will do whatever we possibly can to achieve that goal.”

Several other coaches have already fallen on "Black Monday," but none more surprising than Lovie Smith.
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the now-former Bears coach has been fired after nine seasons.
The news is surprising given that Smith is coming off a 10-6 season and has accumulated an 81-63 career record, including a Super Bowl appearance. However, his downfall...
SAN DIEGO - Chargers coach Norv Turner sounded like a coach resigned to his fate. "We're going to meet tomorrow and with the team and I'm sure they will start looking for a new coach," said an emotional Turner about his future with the Chargers after they earned a 24-21 victory over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday before 66,486 at Qualcomm Stadium. "To have...
I started writing a recap of every team in the NFL. I was going to rip most teams to shreds and really only give like…three teams any credit whatsoever (Broncos, Patriots, 49ers if you’re really that curious). I was building my list alphabetically. I mocked the Cardinals. I gave credit to like, one-fifth of the Falcons. If The post Chicago Bears Needed to Move On From Lovie...
The Chicago Bears have fired coach Lovie Smith, who has been with the team for the past nine seasons, according to Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune.
Despite starting the season 7-1 the Bears missed the playoffs for the second consecutive season, finishing third in the NFC North with a 10-6 record.
Under Smith the Bears remained a defense first minded team and never developed an...

SPANOS: Gentleman, come in, I just had to wrestle a bag of feces away from my son John, so you’ll excuse me if I don’t shake your hand.
AJ: Before you say anything, let me tell you how excited I am for this draft. There’s a linebacker out of Sarah Lawrence college, He doesn’t even play football right now and in fact is a woman...
Lovie Smith never managed to get the Chicago Bears over the hump in his nine seasons with the team, but it's not often that a coach loses his job following a double-digit win season.
It stands to reason that Smith's résumé will make him an attractive candidate on the open market.
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported on NFL Network's "NFL Total Access"...
After 9 years and 3 playoff wins, the Bears have fired Lovie Smith.
To start, I'd like to say that I don't think Lovie Smith is a terrible coach. Smith led the Bears to a record of 81-63 from 2004 to 2012, and a winning percentage of .563 is 9th of 32 franchises during his tenure. He was also 9-3 in MNF games, for what it's worth (little). There's no doubt in my mind...
Micheal Spurlock returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown and San Diego beat the Oakland Raiders 24-21 on a wet, gloomy Sunday in what's expected to be Norv Turner's final game as Chargers coach.
Turner and general manager A.J. Smith are expected to be fired because the Chargers (7-9) missed the playoffs for the third straight season.
If Turner does get...
The Chargers parted ways with Norv Turner and A.J. Smith on Monday, knocking down the first dominoes in a long chain. The team will hire a new GM before identifying its next head coach. Here is a look at what went down on Black Monday and the team Turner and Smith left behind.
After firing Norv Turner as their coach on Monday, the San Diego Chargers are interested in Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians as a possible replacement, according to the NFL Network. Fired coaches Andy Reid (Philadelphia Eagles) and Ken Whisenhunt (Arizona Cardinals) are also rumored candidates. Arians, who filled in for Chuck Pagano while he took a leave...
Doc Rivers has always stuck up for fellow members of the coaching community. He’s also a Chicago native. So it was doubly hard for him on Monday when he heard that longtime Bears coach Lovie Smith had been sacked.
Despite an 81-63 record in nine years in Chicago, and a win in the final game of the season, Smith was sent packing Monday. The Bears failed to make the playoffs when...
According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, with the news of Bears head coach Lovie Smith getting fired today. wide receiver/kick returner Devin Hester says he’s considering retirement.

I’m not sure how serious Hester is. He could be just speaking out of emotion...
Steve Keim, the Arizona Cardinals' vice president of player personnel, is scheduled to interview this week for the San Diego Chargers' general manager job, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The Chargers fired former GM A.J. Smith and head coach Norv Turner on black Monday, ending two tenures that many felt should have ended much sooner than they did.
Keim has been...

The game of coaching musical chairs has begun.

McCoy has been credited for helping...
