The San Diego Chargers welcomed back quarterback Charlie Whitehurst with a two-year contract.
The deal is worth $4 million - including a $1 million signing bonus, NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reported on Friday night.
Whitehurst's return allowed the Chargers to release veteran quarterback Billy Volek, 35.
Whitehurst spent four seasons with San Diego from 2006-09, although he did not throw a pass in a regular-season game. He was then traded to the Seattle Seahawks, with whom he played in nine contests over two campaigns.

According to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Chargers are at a critical stage in their contract talks with running back Mike Tolbert.
The Chargers want to know if Tolbert is going to stay or not, they could end up deciding to just move on to free agent Jackie Battle.
I know that Tolbert has least another visit scheduled and there are reportedly numerous teams that...
APNewsNow. Tight end Randy McMichael has agreed to a two-year contract to remain with the San Diego Chargers.
The 10-year veteran spent the last two seasons with the Chargers, making 14 starts in 2011 with star tight end Antonio Gates slowed by injuries. McMichael had 30 catches for 271 yards, but did not score a touchdown.
McMichael also played on special teams for San Diego....
The Chargers needed a deep threat to replace Vincent Jackson and may have found themselves quite a bargain in the talented Robert Meachem.
Meachem will slide into the number two role in this offense and has a chance to supplant Malcolm Floyd as the effective number one option before the season is complete.
Meachem goes from a crowded receiving corps in New Orleans to one with a...
Quarterback Charlie Whitehurst has agreed to a two-year contract to return to the San Diego Chargers.
Whitehurst was San Diego's third-round draft pick in 2006. He was the third-string quarterback behind Philip Rivers and Billy Volek for four seasons and never attempted a pass in the regular season. He was traded to Seattle and played in nine games in two seasons, throwing for...
A WELCOME CHALLENGE
The Broncos are reportedly one of three finalists to land Peyton Manning, and Philip Rivers is hoping Denver pulls it off to increase the competition in the AFC West.
Step away from that ledge Falcons fans, we have our first free agent visit lined up! I am almost in a state of shock that D. Orlando Ledbetter said Atlanta should look at Marcus McNeill... and it is actually happening.
McNeill plans to visit Atlanta next week hopefully to help shore up a left tackle spot that has been as successful as the Hindenburg.
Marcus receives a playful...
After two years trying to earn a starting job in Seattle, Charlie Whitehurst returned to where he started, agreeing to a two-year deal with San Diego. The Seahawks traded for Whitehurst two years ago with the Chargers, swapping second-round picks and giving up a third rounder with the hopes that the Clemson product could develop into the quarterback of the future. Whitehurst won...
You can't fault Philip Rivers' competitive nature, even as the team around him looks like it's falling apart. The San Diego Chargers missed the playoffs last season and conceded the AFC West crown to the Tim Tebow led Denver Broncos. Now Rivers would love to see the Broncos bring Peyton Manning aboard. Not because he has a personal vendetta against the guy. It's because...

While it may not be the big splash Patriots fans were hoping for, Bill Belichick appears to have found a new starting safety in six-year veteran Steve Gregory.
The former Charger brings starting experience, versatility and athleticism to a cripplingly-bad group of safeties from 2011.
In 15 games, Gregory recorded 67 tackles and a pick. His best season came in 2009 when he posted...
The San Diego Chargers have re-signed tight end Randy McMichael to a two-year contract, Aaron Wilson of Scout.com reports. Financial terms were not disclosed. McMichael, 32, has 417 receptions for 4,488 yards and 24 touchdowns during a 10-year career that began as a 2002 fourth-round pick out of Georgia by the Miami Dolphins. McMichael spent the first five seasons of his career in...

The deal is worth a reported $13.5 million for Royal, who played his first four seasons with the Denver Broncos.
