Safety Bob Sanders
The Chargers made a move today that nobody wanted to see but many feared would happen. Safety Bob Sanders was placed on season ending injured reserve. Sanders came to the Chargers with the hopes that he could return to the form that saw him win NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2007. He has had ankle, foot, knee, and bicep injuries throughout his career, and a recurring issue with knee swelling is what cut his season short this time. The Chargers attempted to keep him healthy by limiting his play to first and second down. Sanders will be sorely missed despite only playing two games. His intensity and passion are unrivaled, and he has a remarkable skill set.
The Chargers addressed injury issues on the defensive line by acquiring Tommie Harris. Harris has made the Pro Bowl three times and recorded a career high eight sacks in 2007. He was last with the Indianapolis Colts but was cut in the preseason. With Luis Castillo and Jacques Cesaire unavailable at present, he will likely play right away.
Many are speculating that injury issues throughout the NFL relate to lockout shortened training camps. Whether or not this is true, we can only hope the trend will stop.
