Chargers' Melvin Ingram: 'We're a play or two away from being 5-3 or 6-2'

The Chargers have had a season filled with frustration, as they have lost six games this year by a combined 24 points, including several where they have held double-digit leads. Pass rusher Melvin Ingram says that the team has not given up despite their disappointing 2-6 record.

"We just have to stay the course," Ingram told CBS Sports. "We just have to stick together. We just let them know it comes down to detail. We're a play or two way from being 5-3 or 6-2."

Typically, when a player says something like that, they're greatly over-exaggerating about their team's chances, but in the case of the Chargers, Ingram really isn't that far off. In their last two games alone, they are a goal-line stand and a goal-line conversion away from being 2-0 instead of 0-2.

But close losses are still, in fact, losses, and the Chargers' late-game struggles have left them near the bottom of the NFL standings. Still, there is at least one thing the Chargers can be excited about: rookie quarterback Justin Herbert, who has looked like an absolute star in the making so far. Ingram praised Herbert and seemed to say the rest of the team needs to step up to start getting him some wins.

"Justin has been playing lights out," Ingram explained. "He's playing amazing football, but we all have to do a little bit more. It doesn't matter how good you play if we (as a team) can't play better."

The Chargers will try to get their season back on track against the Miami Dolphins this Sunday.
