Phillip Rivers Kevin Acee of Union-Tribune San Diego writes that the Chargers should consider trading QB Philip Rivers if they are not willing to make drastic upgrades to their offensive line. Acee asked a ”half-dozen agents and assistant coaches” about the idea at the Combine and no one disagreed with his reasoning. Rivers is an obvious pocket passer, so he needs adequate protection to be effective. Acee points to the fact that Rivers accounts for $17 million of the Chargers’ 2013 salary cap as the main reason why they need to address their offensive line now, versus going with a balanced approach towards building their roster. Rivers was sacked 50 times last season and there’s no guarantee that OT Jared Gaither will be brought back. They could take a big step forward by re-signing G Louis Vasquez and grabbing one of Luke Joeckel, Eric Fisher or Lane Johnson in the first round. It’s hard to say what kind of market the Chargers would find for Rivers, but it’s just a speculative idea proposed by Acee more than anything else. Cordarrelle Patterson Bill Williamson of ESPN mentions that the Tennessee WR Cordarrelle Patterson could be a “dark horse possibility” for the Chargers No. 11 overall pick. “He is considered the top receiver prospect,” Williamson writes, “He is a dark horse possibility for San Diego at No. 11.“ Patterson put together decent combine performance and has plenty of ability overall. There are some concerns relating to his overall technique as a receiver, but he could develop into a real game-changing talent. It makes more sense for them to target offensive line than grab a receiver, but the top 3 offensive tackles have really improved their stock to the point where it’s not a guarantee that one of them with fall to San Diego at No. 11. After all, a team could always jump them given that they’re considered to be among the best players in the draft.
