Chargers Release Veteran Backup QB Billy Volek

Not long after announcing that they had signed Charlie Whitehurst to a two-year contract, the San Diego Chargers cut veteran backup quarterback Billy Volek. Now, Whitehurst will back up starter Philip Rivers. Volek, 35, has played in the NFL for 13 seasons, spending the past six years with the Chargers. Volek has played in 39 career games with 10 starts. Five years ago in a playoff game, Volek stepped in for an injured Rivers and led the team on an eight-play, 78-yard touchdown drive.
