The San Diego Chargers signed cornerback William Middleton to a one-year contract Sunday.
He takes the roster spot of inside linebacker Jonas Mouton, who cleared waivers and was placed on season-ending injured reserve after tearing the ACL in his right knee last week.
Middleton spent the last four seasons with Jacksonville. He played in 10 games last year, starting three, and had 18 tackles.
Middleton gets another chance after being noticed by Chargers personnel executive Tom McConnaughey.
The Chargers figure to have three new starters in the secondary. Where Middleton will land will be determined.

The San Diego Chargers have waived linebacker Jonas Mouton who tore his ACL on Thursday when the team had its first practice of training camp.
Through the team website we have learned that Mouton will be placed on injured-reserve if he clears waivers, which is very likely.
Before the injury, Mouton wasn’t a lock to make the roster. The third year player really was only preparing...
Everyone should know how to swim, as you never know when you may need the life saving technique. San Diego Chargers rookie offensive lineman D.J. Fluker had a terrible childhood experience when he was only 4-years-old and needed to be snatched up by his mother from the bottom of the pool. Chargers second-round pick Manti Te’o, who was raised in Hawaii where swimming is like breathing...
The last time these two Chargers’ rookies were on the field together in a football game they were opponents. First-round selection D.J Fluker played for Alabama who beat Manti Te’o's Norte Dame in the BCS National Championship game. But hey, rookies have to stick together. Michael Gehlken of the U-T San Diego passes along an amusing story about the two rookies that were...

Over the last three seasons, the San Diego Chargers and Philip Rivers have been disappointing. The Chargers have not made the playoffs since 2009 and have finished 7-9. 8-8 and 9-7 over the last three years. Part of their problem has...
San Diego Chargers linebacker Manti Te’o helped teammate D.J. Fluker overcome a fear of drowning and taught him how to swim.
Te’o — the former Notre Dame Heisman Trophy candidate unfortunately known for having a fake girlfriend — played against Fluker, a former Alabama offensive tackle, in the BCS National Championship Game last January. Alabama won 42-14.
But they were drafted...
LaDainian Tomlinson dropped by the San Diego Chargers' training camp to do some reporting for the NFL Network and ended up giving his former team a post-practice pep talk.
The retired star running back got a handoff for old-time's sake while taping an interview with quarterback Philip Rivers after Saturday's practice, although at a slower tempo than normal.
Manti Te’o plus Philip Rivers would equal reality show gold.
That’s just what some members of the San Diego Chargers organization seem to think as the team has been kicking around the idea of appearing on the HBO documentary show Hard Knocks in 2014, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
“We’ve educated ourselves as to what the process is,” Chief Executive Officer A...
Although the Chargers coaching staff has been singing the praises of RB Ryan Mathews, McCoy implied he plans to use a RBBC in San Diego.
“I’ve been raised with (Denver head coach) John Fox in this league,” McCoy said. “We always played with a couple of backs. It doesn’t matter who’s in there. Keep them fresh.
“That’s the big thing. Play the hot hand while you roll...
