The San Diego Chargers have signed veteran punter Mike Scifres to a long-term contract extension, Aaron Wilson of Scout.com reports. Adam Caplan of The Sideline View reports the deal is worth $19 million over five seasons with $9 million in guarantees. A fifth-round pick out of Western Illinois in 2003, the 30-year-old Scifres has a 38.4-yard net average and placed 180 of his 445 punts inside the opponents' 20-yard line over the last seven seasons. Just two of those punts have been returned for touchdowns. Scifres was scheduled to earn $1.155 million in base salary this season, the final year of his 2005 contract extension.
