I had a feeling the Chargers would trade up in the second or third round, and they did not disappoint. Donald Butler will be a fine replacement for Tim Dobbins, who was traded to the Miami Dolphins in a deal that gave us the 12th overall pick. The 2009 Second Team All-Pac-10 interior linebacker is a lot more than just a replacement. The way he attacks the running back will help our ailing rushing-defense and the way he can change direction quickly and react to the quick pass will take away the middle of the field.

He can spy, he can react, and he can use leverage to bull-rush a running back and collapse the pocket. Throw in a 4.61 second 40-time and a productive season with 94 tackles and you’ve got a great all around linebacker with the speed to chase down a running back, as well as the size and strength to manipulate a guard and break a block.

I am looking forward to watching this gap-shooter in action. He will fit right in with our defense and has impressive athletic ability. His ferocity will make offenses respect the middle once again, and his speed and strength will make him intriguing in blitz packages. Now waiting forever until they finally show me a nose tackle!
