San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates is considering sitting out three to five weeks to rest his injured foot and avoid a repeat of last season, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Tuesday.
According to the report, Gates is scheduled to meet with specialists this week regarding the torn scar tissue that had built up in his right foot.
A year ago, Gates missed the last six games with a torn plantar fascia tendon in the foot. He attempted to play with the injury for several weeks but aggravated it and ultimately had his season cut short.
The best remedy for plantar fasciatis is rest, an option Gates is considering based on what doctors may say.
Gates is one of the best tight ends in the NFL. He had eight catches for 74 yards in the season opener and totaled 50 receptions for 782 yards and 10 TDs in just 10 games last season.
