Marc Trestman is closer to having a full 53-man roster The Bears are in the final stages of cutting down their roster to 53 spots,  so let’s take a look at the players who have been cut Friday. Position Analysis Quarterback Jordan Palmer Brother of Carson Palmer, the starter of Week four’s loss to the Cleveland Browns did not disappoint.  He began his career with the Cincinnati Bengals as the backup of his brother. He played in four games in his career, but he showed against the Browns he could play a role for the Bears if they choose to claim him off waivers and factor in more games as an emergency backup if either Jay Cutler or Josh McCown get hurt. His numbers against the Browns warrant a second look at the quarterback — 11/17, 111 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions — so time will tell what happens with him. Trent Edwards The journeyman, known primarily for his injury-plagued stint with the Buffalo Bills, went on to play for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Philadelphia Eagles, Oakland Raiders and Chicago Bears. Edwards, who was a backup for the majority of the teams for which he played, had an injury-plagued career. Edwards’ numbers against the Browns — 10/17,  135 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. This looks to be the end of the quarterback’s time in Chicago, although anything could happen. Running Back Armando Allen The former Notre Dame standout was an undrafted free agent in 2011, and was picked up and shortly waived by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that same year. A few days after that, Allen was picked up by the Bears. Allen impressed, but later lost the RB battle and was later waived in 2012. Allen was fighting for 3rd-string duties, but was done in by a hamstring injury. Tight End Fendi Onobun Drafted by the Rams in 2010, Onobun jumped around the league over the years before landing on the Bears in 2013. Thought to have a rebound performance against the Browns in Week 4 of the preseason, Onobun was cut by the Bears after multiple miscues in the pivotal preseason game. Wide Receiver Brittan Golden In his first stint with the Bears in 2012, Golden returned a blocked punt 22 yards for a touchdown. That was not good enough, however, and he was waived shortly after. He then was a practice squad player for the Jaguars for a short time before returning to Chicago in 2013. That was short lived as well, as he was cut earlier Friday. Offensive Tackle J’Marcus Webb One of the most talked-about o-linemen for the Bears in recent history, Webb was perceived as many to be mediocre for the Bears, even though he played in 44 games in his three years, including 32 straight. Guard Derek Dennis A rookie out of Temple, Dennis did not do much for the Bears in preseason play and was cut Friday. Edwin Williams Undrafted, Williams was signed by the Washington Redskins in 2009. He played in four games for them, and was cut in the 2010 preseason. The Bears picked up Williams in 2010, and most notably returned a fumble for a touchdown in Week 16 against the Green Bay Packers. Safety Tom Zbikowski The Bears released Zbikowski in advance on Sunday, in advance of Friday’s trim-down. Zbikowski entered the NFL in 2008 as a third-round draft choice of the Baltimore Ravens. He played four years there and was a standout on special teams. After starting 11 games with the Indianapolis Colts in 2012, the Bears scooped up the safety. He saw action in Week 3 against the Oakland Raiders, but did not receive many reps in training camp. Others include S Tom Nelson, LB Jerry Franklin, WR Josh Lenz, S Brandon Hardin, FB Harvey Unga DE Aston Whiteside , DE Josh Williams, CB Damontre Hurst,  LS Brandon Hartson, DE Josh Williams and FB Harvey Unga. The roster being cut down in preparation for the season means one thing: we are this much closer to gameday.
