The Chicago Tribune is reporting that the Bears have interviewed Pasqualoni, but have yet to make anything official. Either way lets just assume that Paul Pasqualoni is heading to Chicago and take a look at what he’s done and what kind of mess he is getting himself into.
Coach Pasqualoni has been coaching either NCAA or NFL football players since 1982. Here is a snap shot of Pasqualoni’s work as a head coach:
Paul Pasqualoni Chicago Bears
That was Pasqualoni’s resume as a head coach. As a coordinator, Pasqualoni was actually the Dallas Cowboys TE coach in 2005 where he was credited in furthering the development of Jason Witten; he then moved to the defense side of the ball as the linebackers coach in 2006. Pasqualoni has been credited with the development of superstar DeMarcus Ware, so that’s pretty solid. From 2008 to 2010, Pasqualoni was the defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins before being fired and then hired by University of Connecticut.
What Pasqualoni is Getting Into
The short answer is: a mess. The Bears linebackers weren’t exactly world beaters this past season. Yes, Lance Briggs was hurt, but there was a lot more to it than that. Now Pasqualoni has to deal with Shea McClellin being moved from DE because the Bears now believe he’ll be better suited as an OLB. Jon Bostic is now an OLB according the Bears front office as well, so that means you have Briggs, McClellin, Bostic, Anderson and Greene all as OLB and basically no MLB, good start.
Jon Bostic has the physical ability to play LB in the NFL, but his constant over pursuit of plays have limited him. McClellin, more often than not, seems like he is lost out there; yes, he had a good game versus Green Bay, but seriously name one other game that he stood out, in a good way, to you. Briggs is solid, not getting any younger, but solid and than you have Anderson and Greene whose roles will need to be determined. Long story short, Pasqualoni has got some work to do, especially if the Bears are going to stick with the base 4-3 (which it looks like they are).
Anyway you look at it, the Bears have some serious work to do at the linebacker position so that plays like this don’t happen again….
