Chicago Bears Football - The Chicago Bears’ GM Phil Emery is at it again, one day after extending center Roberto Garza’s stay in Chicago, he has found a way to agree to terms with another veteran player. This time it is veteran defensive back Kelvin Hayden.
Important Help in the Secondary
Hayden was signed last year to a one-year deal as well but unfortunately sat out the season with a hamstring injury. With Tim Jennings, Isaiah Frey and Chris Conte being the only starters definitely returning for the 2014/2015 season, this is an important addition. He brings plenty of experience, playing five whole seasons with the Colts, one with the Falcons, and the last two with the Bears.
Who is Hayden to the Bears?
Well, for one, he is a major part of Bears history, negatively. Some of you will remember that Indianapolis Colt who picked off Rex Grossman for a pick-6 in Super Bowl 41? Yeah, that’s this guy. He is also kind of at home now.
Hayden was a University of Illinois, collegiate stud, whom Ron Turner (former Bears offensive coordinator) set into the cornerback position in Hayden’s last year of college football.
Competition at the Nickelback Postition
This should be interesting: Kelvin Hayden and Isaiah Frey competing for the nickel back position in the secondary. Obviously, there is a good chance one of these ball hawks will be looking to move into a corner position if Charles Tillman is not re-signed as well.
Hayden appeared in all 16 games for the Bears in 2012, totaling 37 tackles and four fumble recoveries. Second-year player Isaiah Frey got the call last season and totaled 37 tackles and, well, nothing else but he played very well, especially against those %$Ӥing Packers in the last game of the regular season.
