Amobi Okoye

Chicago Bears GM Phil Emery has been busy today restructuring the Bears' roster in preparation for the regular season opener a week from Sunday.

The Bears traded fullback Tyler Clutts to the Houston  Texans for third year CB Sherrick McManis who is originally from the Chicagoland area and a graduate of Northwestern.  McManis has primarily been a backup in Houston during his first two seasons in the NFL.  He has played in 23 games thus far in his career and returned kicks for the Texans last year.  McManis averaged  20.5 yards per return on 10 returns last year for the Texans.

In another move the Bears are bringing back DT Amobi Okoye who was cut by the Tampa Buccaneers after he missed three preseason games recovering from a knee injury.  Okoye underwent an arthroscopic knee procedure during the offseason and new Bucs coach Greg Schiano lamented that "eventually you have to go out and earn a spot".

Okoye's cut is the Bears' gain as the 24-year-old DT was an integral part of the Bears interior pass rush during the 2011 season.  Okoye finished last season with four sacks and 24 QBPs on the season.

Okoye's departure led the Bears to signing a host of players and trading for Brian Price.  Of the signed players only Nate Collins has shown promise worthy enough of making the roster, but Collins is suspended for the first game of the season.

An injury last night to Brian Price, combined with Stephen Paea's injury means the Bears are low on tackles for the week one game against the Colts.

If all six DTs make the roster and come back healthy, the odd man out would seem to 30-year-old Matt Toeaina.  Toeaina hasn't put together his best training camp this season, though he played very well against the Redskins.  In terms of youth and talent Toeaina comes up short in both categories making him expendable.

In other major roster moves the Bears made two surprising cuts in QB Josh McCown and RB Armando Allen.  The Bears are choosing to go with two QBs for the season and sticking with Lorenzo Booker who was a late addition to the training camp roster.

Two players likely headed to the practice squad are linebacker Jabara Williams and wide receiver Joe Anderson.

The Bears have a plethora of players at DT leading to speculation the Bears may make a trade for a veteran safety.  The need for a veteran safety is extreme, as the most experienced player is perennial backup Craig Steltz.
