The Thanksgiving holiday reminds us all to reflect on our blessings while enjoying a delightful feast of fatty foods, begrudging the seat at the kiddie table and avoiding that uncle who spits while he talks. It’s enough to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside! But this great American tradition wouldn’t be complete without a little trash talk and tackling. (And we’re not talking about what happens after grandma has one too many pieces of rum cake.) Football is at the heart of the holiday and we’re in for a lineup of games guaranteed to give you more heartburn than that third plate of stuffing you swore you wouldn’t eat. One of the oldest rivalries around will play out in Cowboys Stadium when the Redskins take on the Dallas Cowboys. So of course, we had to do it justice by finding two of the biggest die-hards around. One of them was recently inducted into the Pro Football Ultimate Fan Association and other is a D-town diva who once proudly told an opposing fan during a round of trash talk to “Get off her ovaries!” (We can’t make this stuff up….) Team Redskins: Christina Lopez (Leesburg, VA) Years as A Fan: I moved to Virginia 14 years ago and my husband introduced me to the Redskins. Strangely, I am a new fan who has never seen the glory years but within those 14 years I have learned the history and was inducted into the Pro Football Ultimate Fan Association (PFUFA) in Canton Ohio class of 2012. Craziest thing she’s done to support the team? Every time the team leaves for an away game a group of us sends the team off and welcomes them home no matter the weather, time etc. We have been out there in Tropical storms, snow and at 3 in the morning. We will be out there around midnight on Friday morning, too. Win or lose, we are always there. Weirdest superstitions? We always create a scarecrow Cowboy player. For the away game, we drive the Redskins Jeep over him at Redskins Park and for the home tailgate, we light him on fire. (Yes, I am right there with a fire extinguisher if needed. Safety first!) Why she loves her team so much? The history and the tradition. The Redskins also do a lot of work within our community and to me that is one of the most important aspects. Team she hates the most? Silly question! The Cowboys! Want to know how the Rivalry started? In 1952 Dallas wanted to join the NFL. George Preston Marshall refused to allow them into the NFL. Marshall’s wife had written Hail to the Redskins (our fight song) many years before but never copyrighted it. Dallas copyrighted our song and refused to allow the Redskins to play it until we allowed them into the NFL which we did then they gave us our fight song back. The rivalry began and we are one of the longest rivalries in the NFL. Game day rituals? For home games we get up at 4AM (regardless of the kickoff time). We have breakfast on Redskins Road and after the stadium gates open, the Extremeskins Tailgate begins. Score prediction: Redskins 17 Cowgirls 10 Team Cowboys: Shelby Kelly (Fort Worth, TX) Years as a Fan: As far back as my memory serves but I remember first professing my love for the Cowboys in the 80′s. It was like 85, I think – I was 14 – Chicago Bears were doing the Super Bowl Shuffle… Craziest thing she’s done to support the team: Made a huge push to get as many online friends as we could to come spend the weekend hangin’ out with us to celebrate the 1st Home Game at Cowboys Stadium – and we did it BIG!! By the end of the weekend, we had traveled & convoyed all over the city, met & got signatures from over 40 current & former Dallas Cowboys players. Then we threw a huge tailgate party that was so big, it had to be divided into 3 locations! Weirdest superstitions? I must be in my seat 1 hour before kickoff. I must dress head to toe in Cowboys gear – From my Spirit Star Hat to the official Cowboys Socks… Why she loves the Cowboys so much? I have always had an odd fascination with Texas, Texas History and Dallas. I saw the Cowboys and that Star and that was all she wrote! Team she hates the most? Redskins, Eagles & the Steelers Score Prediction: Redskins: 23 Cowboys: 27 The Breakdown: There’s something about the “Thanksgiving Classic” that brings the best out of the Cowboys. After all, they’ve won 5 of their last 6 Thanksgiving games. Maybe it’s the national stage or that unending desire to represent the American spirit. Or maybe it’s because they usually face teams that suck. They won’t be so lucky this time around as the Redskins and rookie phenom RGIII are on a mission to not only get some respect in the NFC East, but maybe even make the playoffs. The Redskins are coming off a big win over the sinking Eagles and the Cowboys recently found themselves in a nail biter with the lowly Cleveland Browns. Even though it’s rumored injured Cowboys running back Demarco Murray could return to the lineup this week, we just don’t think it will be enough to give the home team the edge. Chicks in the Huddle’s Prediction: Redskins 26 Cowboys 17
