Chiefs draft pick unceremoniously waived by AFC West rival

Back in mid-October, the Kansas City Chiefs lost one of their 2023 NFL draft picks on waivers to a division rival. Now, that player has been placed on waivers once more. 

The Chiefs placed sixth-round draft pick Keondre Coburn on waivers with the hopes of re-signing him to the practice squad, following the activation of Charles Omenihu to the active roster. The Broncos had a different plan in mind. They decided to claim Coburn on waivers, signing him to their 53-man roster. 

Unfortunately for Coburn, that stay only lasted for four weeks or so. He was waived on Tuesday according to the league's daily personnel notice.

As much as Coburn didn't really get a chance to showcase his talents in Kansas City, he also didn't get much of a chance to prove himself with the Broncos either. He was a healthy scratch in each of the three games he was on the Denver roster for, including the Week 8 win over Kansas City on "Thursday Night Football." That's basically the same situation he found himself in with the Chiefs outside of the Week 1 loss to the Detroit Lions, the lone game he has been active for during his rookie season. 

What will happen with Coburn moving forward?

A team is still capable of claiming Coburn on waivers and at this juncture of the season there are some teams with interior defensive line needs. If the 23-year-old clears waivers, the decision is then in his hands. He could sign back to the Kansas City practice squad as the team intended their first time around. He could also just as easily sign to the Denver practice squad if he feels the opportunity and situation there is better for him.
