Dwayne Bowe is considered to be one of the top free agents hitting the open market next month.
However, as Ian Rapoport reported Thursday evening on NFL Network, Bowe may not become available after all.
The Kansas City Chiefs are actively pursuing a new contract with the 6-2, 221-pound wide out, according to sources close to the situation. Bowe’s reps have met with the team and conversations are expected to continue in the coming weeks.
It’s unclear whether the Chiefs would use the franchise tag on Bowe for the second straight season. The former first round pick (No. 23 overall in 2007) was a free agent last year before accepting Kansas City’s one-year, $9.5 million offer in August.
Bowe, 28, proved to get the better end of that deal. In 13 games (12 starts), he caught 59 passes for 801 yards and three touchdowns. It was the third time in his six NFL seasons when he fell short of 80 receptions and the 1,000-yard mark.
