Chiefs lose rookie defender for second time this season
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Just like that, the Kansas City Chiefs have lost a 2023 NFL draft pick for the second time this season.

The first time around, the Chiefs lost DT Keondre Coburn after they waived him from the 53-man roster. He was claimed by the Denver Broncos, who kept him for three weeks before releasing him. Afterward, Kansas City added the sixth-round draft pick to their practice squad, as they intended when they first released him.

According to his agent, Murphy McGuire, the Tennessee Titans have poached Coburn and signed him to their 53-man roster from the Chiefs' practice squad.

With Jeffery Simmons and Kyle Peko dealing with injuries, the Titans were short on defensive tackle depth. Plundering the Chiefs' practice squad to find a young and hungry player like Coburn makes a whole lot of sense.

Per NFL rules, Tennessee must keep Coburn on their 53-man roster for at least three weeks. With little hope for the 2023 NFL season, they'll probably keep him on the roster through the end of the season, to keep him on their squad for the future.

This will leave the Chiefs with a free space on the practice squad. WR Chase Cota just landed with the Houston Texans, so it'll be interesting to see who they bring in. The team also just placed TE Gerrit Prince on the practice squad injured list, so expect that a pass-catcher could be added to the practice squad.
