DENVER - JANUARY 03: Quarterback Matt Cassel #7 of the Kansas City Chiefs prepares to take a snap against the Denver Broncos during NFL action at Invesco Field at Mile High on January 3, 2010 in Denver, Colorado. The Chiefs defeated the Broncos 44-24. (Photo by Doug Pensinger/Getty Images)

Coming into the season, expectations were high for the Chiefs to rebound from their injury plagued campaign a year ago and make a strong push towards an AFC West title.

Those expectations have fallen by the wayside after a 1-3 start has essentially made it all but impossible for Kansas City to find their way into the playoffs this year, and many on the team are beginning to question the continued faith in Matt Cassel as the Chiefs starter at quarterback going forward.

According to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, a source close to the team has indicated that Cassel would already be watching the Chiefs games from the bench, if the team had a viable alternative waiting behind him. The Chiefs current backups are Brady Quinn and Ricky Stanzi, and neither have shown any ability to outplay Cassel, leaving Kansas City with no option but to stick with him in the coming weeks.

General manager Scott Pioli  pushed hard to convince Peyton Manning to make a visit to Kansas City in the off-season, but his pleas fell on deaf  ears, as Manning ultimately sided with the Chiefs division rival in the Broncos, and has led them to a 2-2 start on the season.

If the Chiefs continue their losing ways, you can bet that Cassel will be removed from the field and the team will cast their lot in with either Quinn or Stanzi for better or worse to finish out the year.

As the Colts showed last year, struggling through a miserable year can have its benefits, as Indianapolis was able to obtain the top selection in the 2012 draft, picking the consensus top player in Andrew Luck to replace Manning and provide a franchise quarterback for years to come.

The Chiefs could be in a similar position, depending on their performance the rest of the season, and with several top flight quarterback options expected to be available at the top of next year’s draft, Cassel’s days are almost assuredly numbered in Kansas any way you look at it.
