Chiefs named 'ideal' fit for former All-Pro WR

The Chiefs may be coming off back-to-back Super Bowl championships, but that does not mean their roster lacks needs.

One hole Kansas City had this past year, for example, was at wide receiver.

Luckily, Patrick Mahomes is one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time and was able to make it work, utilizing Rashee Rice and some auxiliary options.

The Chiefs then addressed the position this offseason, signing Marquise Brown in free agency and selecting Xavier Worthy in the NFL Draft.

It looked like they were about to have a rather fearsome receiving trio, but then Rice got himself involved in some pretty serious legal trouble.

Rice is likely facing a lengthy suspension from the NFL. If and when that comes to fruition, Kansas City will essentially be back at square one wideout.

Keep in mind: Brown is coming off a couple of subpar seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, and Worthy is entirely unproven. So, if Rice is out for an extended period of time, that could be troublesome for the Chiefs’ aerial attack.

That’s why John Dillon of Chiefs Wire came up with a list of free-agent wide receivers Kansas City should pursue, and he has tabbed former New Orleans Saints star Michael Thomas as a possibility.

Thomas was once one of the league’s best receivers, but injuries have sapped him of his former glory.

He entered the NFL in 2016 and made three straight trips to the Pro Bowl between 2017 and 2019, earning a couple of First-Team All-Pro selections and leading the league in receptions (149) and receiving yards (1,725) in the latter campaign.

However, in 2020, Thomas suffered an ankle injury that knocked him out after just seven games and caused him to miss all of 2021. He appeared in just three contests in 2022, and this past season, a knee issue limited the 31-year-old to 10 contests.

During his time on the field in 2023, Thomas was fairly productive, logging 39 catches for 448 yards and a touchdown.

Based on his history, Thomas would be an enticing option for the Chiefs, but can he stay healthy?

This is certainly not the same superstar pass-catcher from years ago, but at this point, Kansas City may be desperate.

If the Chiefs catch wind that they may be without Rice for a long time in 2024, it may not be a bad idea to try and add Thomas to see if he can recapture the fountain of youth.
