Chiefs Release Troubled Running Back, Johnson

The Kansas City Chiefs have finally had enough of their troubled running back, and have announced to day that they will release Larry Johnson.

You may remember a week or so ago, I had written an article foreshadowing such an event taking place.

The release ends Larry Johnson's pursuit of the Chiefs all-time rushing record, held by former teammate, Priest Holmes. Johnson was just 75 yards away from breaking the record, but running behind that line, it could've taken the rest of the season.

Speaking of the atrocious line, Johnson carried the ball 132 times for only 2.7 yards per carry, but you have to put some of the blame on Johnson himself who seemed to play as if he didn't want to be on the field. His mind wasn't on the game.

The first round draft choice of the Chiefs in 2003 helped the franchise greatly by putting up some of the best numbers by a running back in 2005 and 2006.

But he was often caught with his mouth open when it shouldn't have been.

Most recently on twitter, Johnson lashed out at fans, questioned the knowledge and credentials of Head Coach Todd Haley, and used a gay slur in what would be his final case to catch a ride out of town.

But not all is lost for the former Penn State Nittany Lion.

The Redskins have recently been reported as having interest in Johnson.

As you may remember, Clinton Portis left the Redskins game against the Falcons on Sunday with what is diagnosed as a concussion.

Head Coach, Jim Zorn, has stated that his team will add a running back to the roster if Portis can't go. Portis said he still experienced a headache Monday morning and is listed as doubtful for this week's upcoming game.

Johnson could help a Redskin rushing attack that has been non-existant all year, but adding another headache to a team in turmoil may not be the best situation for either side.

Ladell Betts did carry for 93 yards from scrimmage on only 16 touches on Sunday, but the Redskins still lacked any type of solid rushing attack.

Johnson will end his career as a Chief with 5,996 rushing yard and 55 touchdowns, while also catching 151 passes for 1,369 yards and six touchdowns.

This year, in 132 carries behind inconsistent blocking, he averaged only 2.7 yards per carry. He ends his Chiefs career with 5,996 yards rushing and 55 touchdowns. He also caught 151 passes for 1,369 yards and six TDs.
