It’s going to be fun in Philadelphia for the 2013 season, coach Chip Kelly has his own way of explaining what he wants on defense, and it’s basic straight to the point. Kelly, ever the sophisticated offensive mind has a brutally simple philosophy on defense. There is two ways to go when building a defense, small based on speed or big dependent on strength. Kelly is prescribing to the latter. 4-3 defenses are typically smaller with speed, and 3-4 defenses rely on being physical. Kelly has already decided to go with a 3-4, which needs big and long defenders who can win at the point of attack, not run around it. "You have to adjust to what you have. No one is starting from Square 1 and saying, 'How do we build a perfect defense, offense, and special teams?'" Kelly said, via Jeff McLane of Philly.com. "And you don't have 100 first-round draft picks, either, so you can say, 'Hey, I really like that guy, but he's gone.' "So you always have to make adjustments to what you do. But we want taller, longer people because big people beat up little people." McLane writes: ‘The Eagles were long at the cornerback spot as well with Nnamdi Asomugha (6-2, 210) and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (6-2, 182), proving that measurables matter only so much when evaluating talent. But all things being equal in terms of skill and mind, Kelly is going to take the 6-5, 265-pound outside linebacker over the 6-1, 265-pound one. The Eagles have added some size to that spot, signing free agent Connor Barwin (6-4, 268) last week. They replaced Asomugha and Rodgers-Cromartie with the similarly sized, but more motivated Cary Williams (6-1, 190) and Bradley Fletcher (6-0, 200). Safety Kenny Phillips (6-2, 217), if healthy, would tower over Kurt Coleman (5-11, 195). Kelly, as he mentioned, can't remake the defense in one offseason. So defensive end/linebacker Brandon Graham (6-2, 265), linebacker Mychal Kendricks (5-11, 239) and cornerback Brandon Boykin (5-9, 182) will remain. It helps that all three have upside, too.’ var switchTo5x=true; stLight.options({publisher:''});

Waiting to Exhale on Eagles Free Agency...

That was quite a three-way debate yesterday among our esteemed Bored members ATV (Chris Ruggiero), JB-Sage-Lion and J. Trent over the Cornerstone Theory of Drafting in the NFL. Throw in a dash of Brizer's mBPA Theory for seasoning, and the end result was a lot of football learning---and my utter exhaustion and need to exhale. Speaking of the history of the league's best...

There has been speculation that the Philadelphia Eagles are attempting to trade Jeremy Maclin, but Geoff Mosher of CSN Philly reports the team isn’t actively shopping the wide receiver. I've been throwing a football the wrong way my whole life!!

You know it's a slow news day in Eagles Land when I literally searched for inspiration by throwing a football around with my neighbor's kids. Then it hit me!---no, not the ball...well, yes, sort of... I was never trained as a QB in throwing the football. It's a position I never played. But every kid plays throw and catch with a football. It's the Amurrikin way...

Trading Places in 2013 Eagles Draft...

I wanted this piece to be a history of the best tradebacks in Eagles draft lore. Trading back is when you deal an earlier pick to another team for two or more of their later picks...or some other valuable consideration. It seems to me the way to go if you want the most bang for your draft buck.                   ...
