EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Leslie Frazier had a change of heart. Two days after proclaiming Christian Ponder was "our quarterback," the Minnesota Vikings coached declared Matt Cassel will start when the team returns from its bye week for a home game against the Carolina Panthers. Cassel led Minnesota to its first win of the season on Sunday in London against the Pittsburgh Steelers, going 16 of 25 passing for 248 yards and two touchdowns. Cassel, 31, was signed in the offseason to be Ponder's veteran backup and possible mentor. Ponder missed Sunday's game with a fractured rib, the exact reason the Vikings wanted a proven backup behind Ponder, after Joe Webb struggled in his one start last season. Cassel was signed after being released by the Kansas City Chiefs after two tough seasons and Webb was moved to wide receiver. Cassel signed with Minnesota days after being released and acknowledged he was coming to the Vikings purely as a backup for Ponder, who hasn't had a veteran influence behind him since taking over as the team's starter in 2011 and the team released previous starter, Donovan McNabb. Cassel entered Sunday and helped the offense put up a season-high 393 total yards and 34 points in getting the first win of the season. More importantly, Cassel didn't have any turnovers though he did have an interception broken up by Cordarrelle Patterson and a fumble recovered by receiver Jerome Simpson. Ponder had five interceptions and two lost fumbles in the season's first three weeks. Following Sunday's win, Frazier said he was sticking with Ponder as the starter, assuming his health, but did say he couldn't rush into a decision so quickly after the game and had to go back and watch game film.
