The Viking faithful knows it; Christian Ponder knows it, as well as Alex Smith of the San Francisco 49ers. The elephant in the room has just moved a little, just a little. However, far down the road it may seem, Smith is a good addition to a football team that needs a quarterback who can manage a game, but go outside the box. Ponder is still young in his second year, but if your looking for a quarterback with an upside bursting out of the box, it’s Smith. Don’t buy Jim Harbaugh saved him, Smith was an overall number one pick in the 2005 draft, he has the talent, but just needs a good quarterback driven Head Coach. If Ponder leads the Vikings to the playoffs then the pressure would be off for the time, but if management feels they could bring in a quarterback that could bring more to the table, like an Smith type, it could spell trouble. Ponder’s recent public love affair gone marriage with ESPN sideline reporter Samantha Steele only fueled speculation that Ponder had left his game in his pants, ESPN’s Kevin Seifert wrote: ““In evaluating Ponder after the season, we won't give him the out of blaming it on his love life. And if he plays well Sunday and takes the Vikings to the playoffs, I hope no one stoops to the idea that getting married cleared his head. So where does that leave us?” So where does that leave us? It leaves the Vikings fans with a running back that is carrying the team in Adrian Peterson in epic proportions, but next year the Vikings may not be so lucky to have another historic season from Peterson. Will they wait to see, or will they be proactive in the off-season?
