The Minnesota Vikings get a taste of their own medicine as they allowed Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts to drive down the field to set up Adam Vinatieri for the game winning field goal to win 23-20 at Lucas Oil Stadium today.  Christian Ponder was 27-35 for 245 yards and threw his first two touchdown passes today.

With the score 20-6 Colts in the fourth quarter with 10:10 left, the Vikings needed a touchdown drive badly.  Ponder and Percy Harvin helped them do just that as they hooked up for three receptions and 36 yards.  With a fourth and four on the Colts' seven yard line, one the craziest plays of the game ensued.

Ponder essentially had to get the ball in the end zone as they were running out of time.  He threw a weak pass as it was tipped by Cory Redding.  It then landed in the hands of Kyle Rudolph, but he couldn't hang on (surprise, surprise) and landed in the hands of Stephen Burton to put the Vikings within a score.

Now the Vikings needed to stop the Colts, something that they had struggled to do all day.  After the Colts converted a third and five, the Vikings held them to another third and five on the Colts 38.  All Vikings' fans were expecting the worst.  Instead, third year defensive end Everson Griffen sacked rookie Andrew Luck for a loss of 22 yards to stuff the Colts.  This gave the Vikings one last shot at tying the game.

This drive, Ponder was absolutely electric as he went 7-9 for 42 yards as he drove the Vikings down the field.  With 39 seconds left, and a first and goal on the Colts' six, the Vikings had the opportunity to kill some clock.  Instead, Ponder threw an incomplete pass to Devin Aromashodu.  Now, second and six with 36 seconds, Ponder makes the six yard toss to Rudolph to tie the game up.  Another overtime game?

Wrong.  There was entirely too much time left on the clock.  This situation needed to be handled differently.  Hand the ball off to Adrian Peterson, let him run some clock down!  Regardless, it is a tie 20-20, and after a touchback, the Colts have the ball at their own 20 with 31 seconds left.

Remember last week when Ponder hardly had anytime left and drove down the field and set the Vikings up for the game tying field goal?  Well, Luck must've watched Ponder's game tape because he easily drove the Colts down the field.  Luck threw consecutive 20 yard passes to put the Colts on the Vikings 40.  Then, after an offside penalty, the Vikings' 11th for 105 yards, the Colts were on the 35.  A strange thing then happened as Luck spiked the ball when the clock was not moving.  Didn't make much sense, but regardless, Vinatieri knocked down the game winning 53 yard field goal.

The Vikings just flat out lied down and died on the last drive.  Ponder lead the Vikings to an incredible comeback in the fourth quarter, but it was all for naught.  Yes, the Vikings offense was anemic the rest of the game, but allowing Luck to throw for 40 yards on two plays?  That's the type of thing that makes Vikings' fans cringe.

Harvin was a huge factor in today's game and easily became Ponder's favorite target as he caught 12 passes for 104 yards.  Peterson was a none factor today as he rushed 16 times for 60 yards.  Part of it has to do with the fact that the Vikings just did not run the ball enough today, but it is hard to establish a running game when you fall behind so quickly.

While Ponder technically out dueled Luck, it doesn't matter if you don't get the win.  Luck was 20-31 for 224 yards and two touchdowns. A very solid game for the young quarterback and gaining his first career win.

The Vikings will come back home next week to face the San Francisco 49ers at 12:00 CT.  The Vikings are going to need to play much better if they expect to compete against a strong team like the 9ers.
