Cincinnati Bengals Agree to Sign Mike Gesicki
Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

The Cincinnati Bengals continue to bolster their tight end room , agreeing to terms with veteran Mike Gesicki, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Gesicki’s deal, according to Schefter, is a one-year pact worth up to $3.25 million and will add another weapon in the passing game to quarterback Joe Burrow‘s arsenal.

Since being chosen by the Miami Dolphins in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, out of Penn State, Gesicki has pulled down 260 career receptions for 244 yards with a pair of receiving touchdowns through his first 98 games.

What Mike Gesicki Brings Cincinnati Bengals’ Offense

Gesicki arrives in Cincinnati as more than an experienced end zone griddy dancer.

The Bengals are betting big on Gesicki returning to form from when he was a legitimate weapon in the Miami Dolphins’ offense. Back in 2021, Gesicki was a focal point, catching 73 of his 106 targets for 780 yards with a pair of touchdown receptions that season.

Gesicki saw a diminished role upon Mike McDaniel’s arrival as Dolphins head coach in 2022 and was ultimately signed as a free agent by the Patriots prior to the 2023 campaign.

Given that it remains to be seen whether Tee Higgins will be back in a Bengals uniform next season, and that wide receiver Tyler Boyd appears primed to test free agency, there could be significant targets from Burrow up for grabs.

At his best, Gesicki is a high-volume producer as a pass-catcher over the middle of the field, which could give him the chance to thrive given the amount of attention defensive backs must pay to Ja’Marr Chase deep and on the perimeter against the Cincinnati Bengals.

“[I feel] like I’m 22 and just got drafted,” Gesicki said, via ESPN.

What is the Cincinnati Bengals’ Current Tight End Depth Chart?

Gesicki spent the 2023 season in a crowded New England Patriots tight end room, but now joins the Cincinnati Bengals in a system that could be tailored to bring out his best traits.

Likely rising to the top of the depth chart, here’s how the Bengals’ tight end room could shape up when the 2024 NFL season begins in September.

1) Mike Gesicki

2) Drew Sample

3) Tanner Hudson

4) Michael Wilcox

5) Irv Smith Jr.

The Cincinnati Bengals are unlikely to keep five tight ends, but it could come down to Mike Gesicki, Sample, and Smith Jr. for the starting job.

If Mike Gesicki and the Cincinnati Bengals have their way, there will be plenty of griddying in the end zone during the 2024 NFL season, and if all goes well this upcoming season, beyond.
