The Cincinnati Bengals signed cornerback R.J. Stanford Monday to replace the recently departed cornerback Brandon Ghee. Stanford has more experience than Ghee who signed a two-year contract with the San Diego Chargers about two weeks ago. Stanford’s 41 career games played, 39 tackles, and an interception will cause Bengal fans to soon forget about Ghee who played in just 23 games and recorded 17 tackles. Stanford, 25, is entering his fourth season in the NFL after being selected in the seventh round of the 2010 draft by the Carolina Panthers. After being waived by the Panthers in 2011, Miami signed him with the intent to utilize him on special teams as a gunner during punt returns. He played in 13 games for the Dolphins last season and finished in the top ten on the special teams unit in tackles before being placed on injured reserve after enduring a broken leg during Week 14 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Bengals are reinforcing their special teams crew, which gave up an average of 9.4 yards per punt return, near the middle of the pack in the NFL, but with room to improve. Stanford is no stranger to uphill battles as he originally started his college career as a running back for the Utah Utes, eventually switching over to a cornerback. Fortunately for him, Stanford will see some comparisons with the Bengals defense, as his former defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle was the defensive backs coach for the Bengals for an eight-year span after two years as the cornerbacks’ coach. Stanford has played with the number 25 on his back for the majority of his career, since running back Giovani Bernard wears 25 anticipate R.J. Stanford to play in 35 like he did previously in his NFL career. The terms of the deal were not immediately released.
