Brian Bassett of The Jets Blog is reporting that the New York Jets have hired former San Francisco 49ers Director of Player Personnel Tom Gamble to be their new General Manager. This is a home-run for the Jets, who in the course of 6 days have fired Mike Tannenbaum and landed the top available candidate on the market to replace him. The bitter local media can play the circus card all they want but they are the ones fitted for a clown suit as every move Woody Johnson has made since the season ended has been savvy and paid off.
Gamble’s resume speaks for itself. He has diverse background and had a major hand in assembling arguably the most talented roster currently in NFL. There will be plenty of speculation about him bringing current 49ers over to the Jets, including quarterback Alex Smith. However, Smith’s price tag could prevent that from happening. It is more reasonable to look towards players like Delanie Walker, Kendall Hunter, or Dashon Goldson.
In the immediate future, all eyes will be on the Head Coaching position. Will Gamble hold on to Rex Ryan or will he look to bring 49ers Defensive Line coach Jim Tomsula into the head spot, which has been rumored for a few weeks? Rex’s job status can’t be considered any higher than 50/50 at the moment. Gamble was a highly coveted candidate who could be given the power to immediately cut ties with him.
Overall, this is a terrific step in the right direction by the Jets who have found somebody with a proven track record of evaluating talent.
