An interesting thing occurred to me at last night’s training camp practice… Jimmy Clausen completed all of his passes.
He completed crossing routes. He completed screens. He completed outs.
What he did not complete is a pass over 10 yards. In fact, he didn’t even attempt one. To be fair, Jimmy was not calling the plays the offense would run in their 11 on 11 drills. He had no control over how deep his route runners would go. So they were not working on the long routes that night, right? Wrong. Cam Newton had more vertical passing plays called for him, one of which hitting Steve Smith on a perfect 30 yard bomb.
So why was Jimmy not getting the deep play calls? In a word…. confidence.
Rivera and Chudzinski realize Jimmy is in an awkward position. Coming off of a god awful season and watching as your coaches draft your replacement with the first pick in the draft cannot be an easy pill to swallow. Clearly the plan for Jimmy is to build him back up. Give him the ...
