The Packers desperately need to add a starting-caliber safety in the offseason, and unless general manager Ted Thompson is willing to spend a No. 1 pick on the position, he’s probably better off signing a free agent. I know Pro Bowlers Jarius Byrd (Buffalo)  and T.J. Ward (Cleveland) will be far too expensive, but how about Miami’s Chris Clemons? I recommended the 28-year-old a year ago, and I’m going to do it again. Clemons hasn’t been great with the Dolphins, but he’s been an above-average player on an above-average defense. The former Clemson star, who’s blessed with terrific size and speed and seems to still be improving, had 8 passes defensed and one interception this past season. Not eye-popping numbers, unless of course you list them alongside those posted by Morgan Burnett and M.D. Jennings. Clemons was paid $2.75 million in 2013 and he’s unlikely to command much more than that on the open market. And once again, he’s well-worth bringing to Green Bay.
