During his season-ending press conference on Thursday, Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren emphasized the organization’s need to “stay the course.” Is it weird that this statement disappointed me? Holmgren also said they are not going to “blow everything up.” When you take a step back from the constant horror that is the Browns, it’s almost funny that that was a relevant point of discussion. 2011 was Pat Shurmur’s first year as head coach and, make no mistake, it was dismal, but he’s not going anywhere. Everyone seems to be pointing to this as Holmgren’s third year with the team, but in truth it’s really the end of his second. He started with five games remaining in the 2009 season and didn’t do anything but eat sandwiches in the press box . He and general manager Tom Heckert have produced two drafts. It’s still way too early to tell if these guys are all completely incompetent, yet this front office is constantly confronted with the need to define the immediate fut...

Random Browns Thoughts on a Friday

This will be boring for those of you who follow along on Twitter, but that’s the way it goes. This morning I listened for a few minutes as Kiley and Booms broke down (over) the Mike Holmgren press conference and I was left with a few thoughts, namely there was absolutely nothing that Mike Holmgren could have said yesterday for some people.  I would love to know what the perfect...

BEREA -- The reassuring Mike Holmgren returned Thursday, the grandfatherly one who promised the Browns will get better, that things are really not that bad and that the team is committed and driven to succeeding. He also elaborated on his statement last month that a 4-12 record for the Browns does not mean its business as usual for the teamWe know what we have to fix, Holmgren said...

Mike Holmgren promises Cleveland Browns will 'stay the course,' but how much progress have they made?

Browns President Mike Holmgren promises the Browns will "stay the course." Debate on exactly how much progress the current course has made is both fair and unconvincing on the affirmative side.

Mike Holmgren 'loves' Colt McCoy, but won't 'anoint' him as 2012 starter: Browns Insider

"We don't know what's going to happen," says Holmgren of the team's QB plans, "and I've had that conversation with Colt as well."

Revisiting the Eric Mangini Firing

Last week things got testy here on WFNY yet again when I brought up that I was tired of hearing the argument that detractors use to say Mike Holmgren is a hypocrite for firing Mangini for not winning enough.  I just wrote a small paragraph on it in a ranting fashion, and I don’t think it might have made the point, and possibly even came off a little antagonistic.  So, I thought...

Mike Holmgren says Cleveland Browns are 'driven' to improve, but 'we're not going to blow it up'

The Browns president pledges to "stay the course" with the team's philosophy of building through draft, but there is less clarity on the future of quarterback Colt McCoy and running back Peyton Hillis.

The Cleveland Browns will “stay the course” for now

According to Cleveland Browns President Mike Holmgren, the franchise will “stay the course” in 2012 and Browns fans have to be asking themselves, ‘what course?’ Holmgren and Browns General Manager Tom Heckert addressed the media for a little over an hour on Thursday and basically told reporters that they were disappointed in the 2011 season but they are going...

Sure, it was a rough season, but Pat Shurmur deserves more time with Cleveland Browns: Bud Shaw

Pat Shurmur created some of his own adversity but the odds were stacked against him in his first season, sports columnist Bud Shaw writes.

Cleveland Browns 2011 in review: The future turned a bit darker with loss to Rams -- Tony Grossi analysis

In a year of unusual occurrences, one nightmarish loss defined Pat Shurmur's first season and altered the Browns' future -- and it wasn't in Pittsburgh.

Vox Lox: Wild Card Sunday

If RGIII is our savior, then I'm your Irish uncle. Yeah, I'm part Mick and it's possible that my brother, RonVox, has some illegitimates scattered around central Ohio, but they'd be too young to read. So it's safe to say that you and I are not related, and I barf up a lung every time I read some mediocre sports blog or hear an ESPN-influenced, uneducated super...

The Remote Report: A Season of Making Something Out of Nothing

Now that the season is over for the Cleveland Browns, it’s time to take stock of what’s going on and start making news out of nothing. Wait a second…that’s exactly what happened all season. Okay, new plan: we’ll take stock and pretend everything is fine, even though the team just went 4-12 in an exercise of futility that hasn’t been seen since...
