PITTSBURGH - DECEMBER 6: Head coach Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers watches his team in the first half against the Oakland Raiders during the game on December 6, 2009 at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Jared Wickerham/Getty Images)

Mike Tomlin did an interview at the coaches breakfast at the NFL meetings yesterday.  During that interview he expressed that he is looking to add another running back.  It could be in either free agency or the draft.

With the loss of Mendenhall and with how uncertain it is that he will return fully healthy the team is looking at running backs.  They have Isaac Redman as the starter but not much proven behind Redman.

The Steelers have John Clay, Baron Batch, Chad Spann and Jonathan Dwyer.  There is potential behind Redman in these guys but there is an unknown of how well they could carry the team if Redman went down.  Dwyer has played a couple of good games while splitting time in the backfield when others were injured.  John Clay is a banger who will get in the end zone.  Batch is an unknown commodity right now.  He is the most intriguing but we will have to see.

If the Steelers are looking for someone proven they will most likely look to the free agent market.  For a solid proven number two there are a couple of options out there.  It will depend on whether the team is looking for someone to run the ball hard or just a guy who can spell Redman and catch the ball out of the backfield.

The Steelers could always go back to Mewelde Moore.  He knows the team and is a Tomlin guy.  He could fit right in.  He actually may be the best option.  The Steelers are not going to pay guys with the salary cap the way it is right now.  The ony way I see us going to anyone but Moore if we go in Free Agency will be if we get no one in the draft.  We most likely will not sign a running back until then.

Now for the draft that is a different story.  There are guys spread the entire way through at running back.  I have this feeling though that Coach Tomlin has a thing for Lamar Miller of Miami.  I am getting this Timmons vibe about Miller.  That vibe where he likes the guy so much that he is taking him no matter what.

Miller is a guy who could fill that spot.  He is a solid back with good speed who can catch out of the backfield.  Miller has a first round grade from me but at his position he is not a first round player.  If the Steelers would like Miller they are most likely going to have to trade back in the first or up in the second.

Even with adding someone to the mix Redman will be the number one back.  He will get his oppurtunity to prove he can start.  Redman should be fine carrying the load.  A good back up would not be a bad idea though as an addition.
