Jim Harbaugh and the San Francisco 49ers unleashed a new offensive wrinkle on Sunday. After losing their first game of the season in Week 3 to the Minnesota Vikings, it appears that Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman have decided that it’s time to inject some life into their Alex Smith paced attack. In a surprise move the 49ers out-Tebowed the New York Jets in the first half by implementing an offensive package that featured second year quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Was this the beginning of the end for Alex Smith in San Francisco?When Harbaugh took over the San Francisco 49ers in 2011 one of the biggest questions he had to answer was who would be his starting quarterback? Most thought Colin Kaepernick, then a rookie, would beat out the veteran Smith, but as everyone now knows; Alex was given the nod late in the 2011 preseason. The Harbaugh regime made the seventh offensive coordinator in seven years for Smith but under new leadership, he would have the best season of his NFL career. Smith led the 49ers to a 13-3 record and an appearance in the NFC Championship game.
