College coach: Daniel Jones will be 'much better' under new Giants offensive coordinator Jason Garrett

Daniel Jones had a promising but inconsistent rookie year, throwing 24 touchdowns but only leading the New York Giants to a 3-9 record as their starter. David Cutcliffe, who coached Jones at Duke and mentored the Manning brothers, thinks that Jones is due for a big second year thanks to a new coaching staff.

"I think we will see a much better Daniel Jones," Cutcliffe told Steve Serby of The New York Post. "I think he's gonna be a much better product than what he was a year ago."

The Giants hired Joe Judge to replace Pat Shurmur as head coach, but Cutcliffe specifically pointed to Jason Garrett, the former Cowboys head coach and new Giants offensive coordinator, as the reason he believes Jones will improve.

"I know Jason a little bit. I think the world of him," Cutcliffe said. "He'll do a great job with Daniel. I think Jason and Daniel are kinda similar people, really smart, analytical people. I think they're gonna be a good pair."

Garrett, of course, helped develop Dak Prescott, one of the league's most promising young quarterbacks. He also was the Dallas offensive coordinator during Tony Romo's early years, and Cutcliffe said the relationship between the two is what he hopes to see replicated with Jones.

"I sat with Jason and [Tony] Romo before, and talked football, and I saw his approach to coaching Tony Romo and the relationship they had. That's why I'm making the assumption that I'll see a similar relationship between Jason and Daniel," Cutcliffe said.

According to Cutcliffe, Jones has been "working 10 hours a day on his own" during the offseason in order to prepare for his first full season as the New York starting quarterback.
